The Parkersburg City Council voted 7-0 Tuesday to give final approval to an ordinance authorizing the issuance of up to $15 million in bonds to finance the construction of a recreation center and a new fire station. The plan calls for the city’s Planning Commission to take possession of both properties — which will be designated in a supplemental resolution in October — and issue the municipal bonds to finance construction.

The city would lease the properties back from the commission, with its payments covering the principal, premium and interest on the bonds. At a meeting of the Parkersburg Urban Renewal Authority after the council meeting, members reviewed six offers to purchase the former Economy Inn property in the 1900 block of Seventh Street. The URA voted 6-1 in favor, with Councilman JR Carpenter opposing the sale of the site to the Astorg family of car dealerships for a new Hyundai dealership.
