President Tharman Shanmugaratnam is on a state visit to the Philippines from August 15 to 17 to mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and the Philippines.

Tharman was warmly received at Malacañang Palace and held talks with his Philippine counterpart, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Their focus was on intensifying cooperation in areas such as emissions rights and healthcare. To promote these efforts, two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed in this area.

The MOU on carbon credits emphasizes cooperation in line with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

This agreement will help both countries achieve their climate goals and promote sustainable development.

During the visit, Tharman will participate in a roundtable discussion organized by the Asia Society Philippines and the Makati Business Club and visit key sites such as the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity and the International Rice Research Institute.

He will also attend health programme events and meet with Singaporeans in the Philippines.

Tharman also praised Filipino athletes, especially Carlos Yulo, for his outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics.

This recognition underlines the strong ties and mutual respect between Singapore and the Philippines.

After his visit to the Philippines, Tharman will travel to Geneva for talks with the World Economic Forum and to Paris to support Singapore’s athletes at the Paralympic Games.
