Overwatch 2 players are unhappy that two popular support heroes continue to receive new skins in the Season 12 event at the expense of better candidates like Venture. They have yet to receive a legendary skin, even though it has been out for months.
Season 12 is notable not only for the new hero Juno, but also for the revival of the Temple of Anubis map. To celebrate, Blizzard is introducing new Battle Pass skins for Illari, Sigma, Ashe, Ana, and Doomfist. Reaper is also getting a Mythic Anubis skin.
However, the new season also includes two Mercy skins and one Kiriko skin, much to players’ chagrin. Mercy already has 38 skins and Kiriko has 20, so fans are unhappy that their collections will continue to grow while other heroes are ignored.
One Reddit user complained about the new support hero skins in a post, saying, “So many other heroes have so few skins, but they keep giving more to Mercy and Kiriko.”
A reply to that post explained why one of the skins – the Marilyn Monroe skin for Mercy – isn’t working for the season: “This skin is a leftover from the Formalwear skins they released for Christmas.”
This wasn’t the only fan to comment on the Mercy and Kiriko skins. In a similar Reddit post, another fan shared his disappointment that these two heroes are getting Season 12 skins instead of heroes like Ramattra and Venture.
The player explained how he was initially excited for Ramattra or Venture to get skins as it was “the perfect theme for both,” but instead neither was included.
Fans of the tank hero were recently upset that Ramattra, whose skills have Egyptian motifs, will not receive a skin for Season 12. Players had previously suggested the idea of an Anubis skin for him.
Venture was also mentioned in both Reddit posts as a better candidate for an Egyptian-themed skin than Mercy or Kiriko, primarily because the hero is canonically an archaeologist. An Egyptian skin would suit them well.
Another post even said that Venture mains are “rotting” due to the lack of skins. Despite three seasons having passed since Blizzard released Venture, not a single legendary skin is available for them.
So why does Blizzard choose Mercy and Kiriko so often? Players had an inkling as to why they were favored in the past and not just in Season 12, as one response was, “Mercy skins fund this game.”
Another response joked, “This game is FTP because of the main characters Mercy and Kiriko.” It seems to come as no surprise to fans that popular heroes get more skins than less popular ones, as viewers are more likely to purchase skins of their favorite characters.
The launch of Overwatch 2 Season 12 on August 20 will not only include these new skins, but also Clash mode and a new hero named Juno, who brings her own unique support abilities.
