Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 18 million deaths each year. These include diseases of the heart and circulatory system such as strokes, coronary heart disease and heart failure.
And in the UK, it’s just as deadly, causing around a quarter of all deaths, so being able to spot the warning signs early can be life-saving.
Many of us are familiar with some of the most common symptoms, such as chest pain. However, others are less well known and less obvious.
In some cases, these symptoms can appear in the most unlikely places – including the skin.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), there is a certain pattern on the skin that can be a telltale sign of heart problems.
The health authority warns that a blue or purple “web-like” pattern on your skin could indicate a blocked artery.
This is called livedo reticularis and is attributed to spasms of the blood vessels or a circulatory disorder near the surface of the skin.
However, in many cases there is no cause for concern and various factors may play a role, such as a cold or certain medications.
The AAD says, “Some people see this pattern on their skin when they are cold. When their skin warms up, this pattern disappears.”
“This pattern can also be seen when taking certain medications. If one of these causes the net-like pattern, there is usually no cause for concern.”
But it could also be a sign of something more serious. “This web-like pattern can also be a sign of a condition called cholesterol embolization syndrome, which occurs when small arteries become blocked,” the AAD says.
“The blockage can cause tissue and organ damage, so it’s important to see a doctor to find out if you have an undiagnosed condition.”
The Mayo Clinic in the US adds that you should talk to your doctor if:
- The discolored, spotty skin does not disappear with heating
- You have discolored, blotchy skin and other symptoms that worry you
- Painful nodules form in the affected skin
- Wounds form in the affected skin
- You also have a condition that affects blood flow in your limbs
- Your skin symptoms are new and you have a connective tissue disease.
Other warning signs of heart disease include:
- Chest pain
- Pain, weakness or numbness in the legs and/or arms
- breathlessness
- Very fast or slow heartbeat or palpitations
- Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
- fatigue
- Swollen limbs.
