After a magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck the community of Lake Elsinore on Thursday, city officials said the earthquake investigation was complete and no building damage occurred except for a 100-year-old building in the city center.

Visible cracks were visible on the outside of the vacant building and the city authorities contacted the owner to confirm whether there was any damage inside.

City public works crews were assessing the area for damage and first responders were on standby to respond, Lake Elsinore Mayor Steve Manos said.

“This was followed by strong jolts and shaking. (It) felt different than a normal earthquake,” the mayor explained.

According to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center, the Elsinore Fault, which stretches for about 177 kilometers, is one of the largest in Southern California and also one of the quietest. The last major earthquake was a magnitude 6.0 earthquake in 1910.

“It’s a reminder to people to be prepared because you never know when a natural disaster like this will strike,” warned Mayor Manos. “Make sure you have food and a plan of attack for yourself, your loved ones and your pets.”

The magnitude of the earthquake was initially measured at 3.9, but was later downgraded.
