The Boston Red Sox traveled to Maryland and played the first of four games against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Thursday night. Alex Cora’s team suffered a 5-1 defeat.
Boston’s offense struggled against the five pitchers Baltimore fielded in this game. They had seven hits and struck out 10 times on the night. Their only run came on a solo blast by Wilyer Abreu (2-for-3) in the fourth inning that gave the team an initial 1-0 lead. Ceddanne Rafaela (2-for-3) was the only player in the lineup to have multiple hits.
The Red Sox pitchers were good. Nick Pivetta started and went five innings, allowing three runs on just three hits (two home runs) and one walk, and striking out six batters. Bailey Horn allowed one run on two hits in one-third of an inning. Chase Shugart pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out two batters.
The loss drops Boston’s record to 63-57 overall and 34-25 on the road. This is also their second straight loss. The two teams will meet again on Friday.
