Green Island may not be familiar to you. It lies on the highway between Montego Bay and Negril in western Jamaica. But two new resorts mean the area will soon be on the tourist radar.
This is the idea behind Jamaica’s two newest resorts, both of which belong to a brand new to the destination: Princess Hotels and Resorts, which owns 12 hotels in the Caribbean, spread between Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and the Riviera Maya on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
The new hotels Princess Senses, The Mangrove and Princess Grand Jamaica, which together will have more than 1,000 rooms, will soon open. As the Caribbean Journal has learned, there is now also an official opening date: September 15th.
So what do you need to know about them?
Princess Senses The Mangrove is an adults-only, all-inclusive offering: rooms are either suites (with sea views or swim-out options) or a series of overwater villas with their own private pools. There are also 14 restaurants and 15 bars and lounges.
The Princess Grand is a family-friendly resort with a kids’ club for the little ones, a teen center, the option to hire a nanny service and plenty of sports facilities. Amenities include everything from three pools to eight bars and nine restaurants. Craving international cuisine? The culinary program offers a multicultural approach, from Mexican to Jamaican to Asian fusion. And yes, there is a water park.
And what about the costs?
Rates for the Princess Grand start at approximately $505 (when booked direct) for stays from September 15th, which will get you a Princess Junior Suite with an all-inclusive package.
Rates at the adults-only resort start at $579 per night on the same dates, which gets you a “deluxe junior suite.” A room with swim-out access costs $661 per night, a perk well worth the money.
The debut of the new Princess resorts marks the first major opening of the year for Jamaica, and the company says it has several more hotel rooms planned (in various stages of development) across the island.
The most highly anticipated resort in this group is almost certainly the first UNICO resort in the English-speaking Caribbean, following the hugely popular resort in the Riviera Maya. However, the opening date for this resort has not yet been announced.

CJ Expert Opinion: This is a huge innovation in an area between the two great poles of Montego Bay and Negril that has so far been largely spared from tourism.
