LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A fatal accident at the intersection of West Ann Road and Simmons Street in North Las Vegas killed 9-year-old Sophia Sandoval just a few days before the start of the new school year.
Recent emergency calls from that Saturday afternoon, August 3, detail the moments when nearby motorists and other witnesses intervened to try to save her life.
“Don’t touch her, guys. Don’t move her, don’t move her, don’t move her. But don’t pull her out, guys. I’m telling you, don’t move her. Look at her side to wake her up, but don’t move her,” said a witness to the accident who called 911.
Shortly after 4 p.m. that Saturday afternoon, the 911 emergency dispatch center received several more calls, all attempting to alert emergency responders to the severity of the accident that many passersby had just witnessed.
In addition to these emergency calls, a North Las Vegas police report also describes the moments of the accident in which the driver, Christina Sorensen, who was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, allegedly ran a red light and crashed her vehicle, a Chevrolet Corvette, into a Jeep while attempting to turn left onto Ann Road, according to police.

Caller:“A car just rolled over.”
Dispatcher:“Okay. So, do you think you need medical attention?”
Caller:“I would say yes,” added another caller.
A child approximately the age of the now deceased 9-year-old girl, who was a passenger in the Chevrolet Corvette at the time of the accident, according to North Las Vegas police, also called 911 in an attempt to save the life of someone of such a similar age.
Dispatcher:“911. Police, fire department or emergency services?”
Caller:“I’m 11, but my mom and grandma just got out of the car and there was an accident.”
Another caller was horrified by the sight, emphasized the seriousness of the situation and requested first responders to the scene of the accident.
Caller:“There’s a baby. Oh my God, there’s one.”
Dispatcher:“Okay, we’re here now. Wave to them.”
Caller:“There’s a baby. She’s unconscious.”
While bystanders try to take life-saving measures, the sirens of an ambulance can be heard in the background. Then paramedics quickly take over the care of the unconscious nine-year-old.
Caller:“I see a police officer just showed up. They’re performing CPR on a small child,” another caller added.
According to North Las Vegas police, 9-year-old Sophia was pronounced dead at the hospital and later identified as Sorensen’s niece.
As for the driver of the Jeep, according to NLVPD, that person was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Sorensen was arrested and charged with drunken driving, reckless driving and child abuse. She later posted bail and was placed on electronic monitoring before being released on her own recognizance.
Sorensen is due back in court on December 10 to review the status of a criminal complaint that was filed.
