CANANDAIGUA, NY – A dog attacked a child and his father on South Main Street in Canandaigua Thursday morning, Canandaigua police confirmed.
The attack occurred at 9:44 a.m. According to police, the victim, a 43-year-old man, was walking on the sidewalk with his 10-year-old son when the brown pit bull jumped up from behind and attacked the son. When the father tried to help, the dog began to attack him – while the child ran to a nearby store for help.
Then passers-by and officers helped to snatch the dog from the father.
Both sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to Strong Hospital. A bystander was also injured while attempting to control the dog and was taken by private car to FF Thompson Hospital.
Officials say investigators have identified the dog, saying it had been wandering around before, which people had complained about, and it was not properly registered.
Police say the same dog attacked a three-year-old child playing on her lawn on Chapin Street earlier this month, on August 12.
On August 19, the dog was found running loose in the same area. Canandaigua Police issued the owners a citation the same day for letting the dog run loose.
Her court date was scheduled for August 20.
The investigation is still ongoing.
