Reddit is back online after an outage left the site down for half an hour this afternoon. The site appears to be down across the board, aside from a blank homepage that didn’t contain or link to any content. “An error occurred,” the site said. Attempting to navigate to a specific subreddit resulted in the error shown above: “We were unable to load the content for this page.” However, as of 4:45 p.m. ET, subreddits and comments were loading as normal again.
On the Reddit status update page, the issue is listed as “Degraded performance for reddit.com” and was initially marked as “Under Investigation.” At 4:32 PM ET, the status was updated to “Identified – The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented.”
At 4:45 PM ET, it was updated again to read “Monitoring – A fix has been implemented and we are monitoring the results.” However, the site’s performance is still showing as “Degraded.”
Of course, it didn’t take long for the first jokes to appear on social media:
Reddit is down. How am I supposed to google anything??

Reddit and Google have signed a much-publicized deal to allow the search giant to train its AI using Reddit user data. Search results have been trending more and more towards Reddit over the past year. Reddit had another major outage earlier this year when it was down for nearly an hour. We’ll keep an eye on the status and update this story accordingly.
Update, August 28, 5 p.m. ET: This story was published as a developing news article about the Reddit outage. It was updated after publication with more details about the extent and duration of the outage, and the headline was changed to reflect the current status of the site.
