If Tom Brady actually becomes part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, his job as a commentator would become quite a challenge.
ESPN reported that the NFL will impose several restrictions on the new Fox analyst if his request to take over the ownership post is approved. The possibility of such a decision was discussed at league meetings in Minneapolis on Tuesday, the network reported.
In addition to the league’s anti-gambling and manipulation policies, Brady, as owner, is also prohibited from:
-
Entering another team’s facility
-
Observe practices
-
Attend broadcast production meetings, in person or virtually
-
Criticism of officials or teams
While Brady will still be able to commentate on games on Fox, he will miss one of the most important aspects of his job. Meeting with coaches and players gives the commentary team additional insight into the games they will be covering. Other Fox members who work with Brady will not be subject to these restrictions.
The restrictions could complicate Brady’s decision to become Las Vegas’ owner. Brady was first reported in May 2023 to be in talks to join the team’s ownership group, months after retiring from professional football. But Brady’s bid is still stuck in discussion with the league’s finance committee, the first step to becoming an official owner.
It is not known what share of the Raiders franchise Brady would receive or how much he would pay for it. During NFL owners’ meetings in Orlando in late March, an NFL owner who wished to remain anonymous told USA TODAY Sports he believed the conflict of interest issue had been resolved. The owner did not want to be identified by name due to the sensitive nature of the issue.
Brady will begin the first season of his 10-year, $375 million contract with Fox alongside Kevin Burkhardt on the network’s No. 1 team. The seven-time Super Bowl winner’s first assignment will be the Week 1 game between the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns.
