Reddit was down on Wednesday
OPINION: In a statement to Times Now: Reddit said: “Today we delivered an update that inadvertently impacted the stability of the platform. We have deployed a fix and are back up and running.”
UPDATE: Reddit was accessible again a few minutes after the massive outage on Wednesday.
Original story:
Reddit was unavailable to thousands of users on Wednesday. Downdetector, a platform that tracks online outages, had more than 90,000 registered reports at the time of writing this story. Social media users complained about problems using the social network’s website and application. The company’s status page said: “A solution has been implemented and we are monitoring the results.”
About 60% of the problems reported on Downdetector were related to the mobile application, 27% to the website and 13% to the server connection. The number of users rose to over 150,000 in the US alone. Thousands also had problems in the UK, where around 30,000 problems were reported at around 9pm local time.
We have asked the Reddit press team for comment on the outage.
Meanwhile, visitors to the desktop version of Reddit saw at least three warnings. “Server error,” read one of the warnings. “An error has occurred. Please try again later.”
Users of the official app saw similar error messages. “How the hell am I supposed to Google things now that Reddit is down?” complained one person on X, a platform formerly known as Twitter.
“If Reddit goes down, all LLMs will be unable to access data,” added another. “Reddit is a disaster today. LOL!” a third commented on the platform run by Elon Musk.
This latest outage is similar to a similar incident in April, when users received the same “try again later” message after a backend issue brought Reddit down entirely. Recently, Reddit battled AI bots and struck deals with OpenAI as the company went public at a $6.5 billion valuation.
