Here is a recent NFL story from the Associated Press:
EXPECTATIONS: The Giants are entering their 100th season. Last season was dismal, and running back Saquon Barkley left Philadelphia for a big haul. Quarterback Daniel Jones is coming off ACL surgery. The reshuffled offensive line has improved after allowing a franchise-record 85 sacks last season. Safety and second-leading tackler Xavier McKinney signed with the Green Bay Packers after playing every defensive snap. Coach Brian Daboll is entering his third season with general manager Joe Schoen. Given the organization’s recent impatience, both could be in trouble if the team doesn’t improve. A lot will have to fall into place for that to happen. Jones will need to show his form from ’22, when he led the Giants to their only playoff berth since 2016 and earned a $160 million contract. Rookie receiver Malik Nabers will need to tap into his big-play potential in camp and stay healthy now. The new O-line has shown promise, but will have to keep Jones up this season and create gaps for new No. 1 back Devin Singletary. Daboll has taken over play calling from coordinator Mike Kafka and the passing game has emphasized advancing up the field. On defense, New York has excellent players in tackle Dexter Lawrence, edge rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns, inside linebacker Bobby Okereke and cornerback Deonte Banks. Kicker Graham Gano is back in shape after surgery on his left knee.
NEW FACES: Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen, Special Teams Coordinator Michael Ghobrial, Burns, QB Drew Lock, OL Jermaine Eluemunor, OL Jon Runyan Jr., OL Greg Van Roten, OL Aaron Stinnie, Singletary, Nabers, TE Theo Johnson, CB Dru Phillips, S Tyler Nubin.
KEY LOSSES: RB Saquon Barkley, S Xavier McKinney, QB Tyrod Taylor, G Ben Bredeson, TE Darren Sharper, WR Sterling Shepard, DL A’Shawn Robinson, CB Adoree Jackson, LB Cam Brown.
STRENGTHS: For the first time in years, the Giants have four speedy players at the wide receiver position. Nabers has made big plays since training camp began, and he gives Jones the opportunity to add depth in addition to Darius Slayton, second-year speedy Jalin Hyatt and Wan’Dale Robinson. Besides Nabers, the biggest move Schoen made in the offseason was signing Burns from Carolina. Combined with Thibodeaux and Lawrence, he gives New York a greater chance to pressure quarterbacks. That could greatly help a secondary that is in transition with Jackson and McKinney gone.
WEAKNESSES: With McKinney and Jackson gone, third-year pro Cor’Dale Flott took Jackson’s job at cornerback and played well until he suffered a hamstring injury. Veteran Nick McCloud started the second preseason game against Houston and played well. The safeties – Jason Pinnock and Dane Belton – need to play closer together. Nubin has potential and should help. Third-round draft pick Dru Phillips played well at nickelback. A strong pass rush could help the secondary.
CAMP DEVELOPMENT: In addition to Jones and Nabers, second-year running back Eric Gray and rookie Tyrone Tracy are competing for the second running back spot. Free agent Dante Miller has also played well. Fourth-round draft pick Theo Johnson will start at tight end. Free agent defensive tackle Elijah Chatman has moved up the rankings.
FANTASY PLAYER TO WATCH: Nabers. He’s the most exciting rookie receiver to come to training camp since New York drafted fellow LSU player Odell Beckham Jr. with the No. 12 pick in the 2014 draft. Beckham caught just 91 passes for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns in 12 games. Nabers caught 89 passes for 1,596 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. Both players left the team after their junior seasons.
BetMGM Sportsbook: Super Bowl win: 150-1. Over/Under wins: 6 1/2.
