Sauce Walka recently explained why he really doesn’t believe any shoe, not even the Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force Ones designed by the late, great designer Virgil Abloh, is worth $55,000.
The Texas rapper voiced his strong opposition to the eye-watering price tag of the limited-edition shoes that resulted from Abloh’s collaboration with Nike at a recent sneaker convention. Although Sauce is known for frequently spending money on cars, clothing, and jewelry, he didn’t hesitate to back up his claim that the shoe wasn’t worth such a high price tag.
“In my personal opinion, no single pair of shoes is worth $55,000,” Sauce Walka explained. “Fifty-five thousand dollars is a car. Fifty-five thousand dollars is a small business that could turn into a million-dollar business. I don’t think a single pair of shoes is worth $50,000.”
Diving further into the details of his view, he explained in detail why the cost of the shoes is based on a “subjective” opinion, which basically makes it the worst kind of investment.
“As a business owner in the shoe market, I’m a genius, as a consumer, I’m an idiot,” he said. “It’s imaginary, it’s subjective. The values that people use to choose their shoes are subjective views.”
Ironically, he concluded by drawing an analogy to the prices of raw materials such as precious metals and gemstones.
“Gold is what gold costs,” he said. “Diamonds are what diamonds cost. Cars are what cars cost. Even though the value goes down and fluctuates, it’s still a real asset. It’s a shoe.”
While Sauce’s logic is pretty convincing, it also seems a bit hypocritical given his recent purchase. Earlier this week, the “Katie Ledecky” rapper revealed he spent seven figures on his new permanent grill. The crazy, one-of-a-kind piece reportedly costs an average of $18,000 per tooth, with the entire 28 teeth adding up to a price tag of over a million dollars.
“Told y’all I had one more surprise for the culture,” he wrote in the caption of his Instagram post. “World’s first permanent 3-1 carat diamond grill for over $1M‼️ 20k-50k per tooth 🦷 28 teeth total 18k rose gold @plug_geo in now 🥕🥕🥕🥕 Last birthday present to myself 2024. #SauceFather2 coming NOW.”
While Sauce may object to the price of the rare AF1s, Abloh’s collaborations with Nike and Louis Vuitton were extremely successful. Before his untimely death in 2021, Abloh’s collections generated hundreds of millions of dollars in sales, which in turn helped LVMH’s overall revenue skyrocket during his tenure, reaching a total of 44.7 billion euros ($51.2 billion).
