MORNING NEWSLETTER ACTION: After a meeting Monday night, Charleston officials may be one step closer to answering the question of the future of the former Piggly Wiggly site on Sumar Street in West Ashley.
According to media reports, Charleston Mayor William Cogswell, together with the redevelopment company Edens, has presented a $300 million plan for the long-discussed site.
“This is the first time we’ve had a comprehensive plan, and with a company that knows the Lowcountry,” said Councilman William Tinkler, who represents the district where the area is located.
The plan includes a public park, multi-use bike and pedestrian paths, and new housing, 10% of which will be designated as “affordable.” Developers said there will be a focus on incorporating local businesses and restaurants.
The plan also includes a 37,000-square-foot stormwater detention system to mitigate flooding throughout West Ashley.
“Right now we’re dealing with 35 hectares of asphalt that really has no retention effect at all,” he said. “So when it rains, it all seeps into the residential areas.”
