New Delhi: A woman from Delhi recounted her encounter with a beggar on the street. She claimed that the beggar verbally abused her for refusing to give money. The incident sparked a discussion on Reddit.
In a now-deleted Reddit post, the woman wrote: “I was coming home from the airport and had a work meeting, so I was sitting on my laptop and my parents were sitting quietly in the taxi. Suddenly this beggar asked for money.” The woman further claimed that her refusal provoked the beggar.
Beggar from Delhi insults woman because she didn’t want to give him money
“We pay taxes, we don’t owe these people anything, yaar! They are just trying to get money from us, they don’t even work,” the woman further said, adding: “Hum 10-12 ghante roz work kre (We work 10-12 hours every day) and they just insult us until we get money! This is blackmail!” she continued.
Also, many commented on the post, some supporting her and others calling her an elitist. One wrote, “Oh my god, the same thing happened to me today and he was a guy, around his 20s I guess; he asked me for money and I gave him 10 rupee coins and he got angry and said ‘Itna kyu deri hai, yeh bhi apne paas rakh’, like what! Why are they so rude and arrogant? Spoiled my whole day (sic).”
Another said: “I understand that this is a crappy experience but you sound a bit naive. No offence! ‘We pay taxes’ is a very, very incoherent and trite sentiment. There is a very big difference between Indian beggars and beggars all over the world and the government. It definitely plays a role in this, think about it.”
