What happens when passive-aggressive cleaning tactics go too far?
A frustrated roommate decided to get creative (and a little bullying) to draw attention to the dirty dishes.
But when a fungus in the sink caused a huge change in the patient’s life, the situation escalated faster than expected.

I (25 M) have a roommate, Jake (26 M), who has a serious problem with leaving dirty dishes in the sink.
We had several conversations about it, but nothing changed. The chaos got out of control and started to really affect my mental state.
Last week I decided to make my point in a more extreme way.
I discovered a mushroom growing outside and decided to plant it in one of the dishes that had been sitting in the sink for a few weeks.
I thought maybe seeing real fungus on his dishes would make him realize how bad the situation had become.
There are no words for this.
I didn’t mean to cause drama, but Jake’s girlfriend found the dish first. She was horrified and the situation led to a big argument between them.
This incident apparently made her realize what a slob Jake is and ultimately marked the turning point in their relationship.
Now Jake is angry at me, blaming me for his breakup and calling me an idiot for creating this situation.
Can we say “plot twist”?
I really didn’t intend for things to escalate like this, but at the same time, his habits are disgusting and need to be changed, regardless of whether his dishes are fertile ground for Portobellos or not.
I feel bad about it so I texted his girlfriend to explain it was just a joke but she’s fed up with him and seems to be done with it whether it was true or not.
I’m scared that this will ruin my friendship with Jake, but at the same time I don’t feel like this is all my fault. Our friends seem to be on his side so far.
A***** or not?
While the fungus may have caught the attention of his roommate, it also destroyed a relationship.
Reddit doesn’t believe that.
This person says Jake ruined his own relationship because he was such a slob.
This person agrees…
And that person can’t get over that tactic. And the fact that it worked.
Who would have thought that a small mushroom could cause so much drama?
Sometimes dirty dishes lead to dirty tricks.
