A new experimental drug offered at the Quakertown Veterinary Clinic is designed to help dogs live longer and better, report Stephanie Stahl and Nate Sylves for ^ “CBS News Philadelphia: The best news from Philadelphia”.
The pill from the biotechnology company Loyal is intended to slow down the aging process so that dog owners can keep their four-legged best friend with them a little longer.
“This is, of course, every dog owner’s dream,” said Dr. Sam Geller of the Quakertown Veterinary Clinic.
A clinical trial for the drug is currently underway at the Bucks County Veterinary Clinic. Geller has enrolled around 50 dogs so far and is currently accepting more participants to test the daily pill.
“It may help prevent insulin resistance,” he said. “It helps regulate the fats in your body. It helps regulate the lipids in the bloodstream.”
Half of the dogs receive the experimental drug and the other half receive a placebo.
“The FDA wants you to prove that your drug is better than a sugar pill,” Geller said.
More than 1,000 dogs are expected to take part in the study. The four-year research will help determine whether the pill can extend a dog’s life by months or years.
