BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Bryan residents will have their first opportunity to comment on the 2024-25 city budget on Tuesday.
This is part of a special meeting that will take place at 5 p.m. During this meeting, the city will also officially announce its budget for the coming year to the public for the first time.
According to the budget and agenda, the city expects to spend more than $526 million next year. If the tax rate remains the same, it will collect nearly five percent more property taxes than the current 2023-24 budget.
The budget provides nearly $3 million in additional property tax revenue and nearly $2 million from the addition of new properties to the tax rolls.
Among the most expensive things the city is planning are the fire department, emergency center and police department, which together are expected to cost about $54 million. That’s about a million dollars more than the costs planned for this year.
Part of the reason a large portion of the budget is allocated to these services is to ensure that they can keep pace with the growth of the community.
“We have to be careful because we want to make sure that public safety is the most important thing for the citizens of Bryan,” said Bryan Deputy Mayor James Edge.
Expenditure on roads and sewers is estimated at just under $2.4 million. This money will be used to repair 200 potholes, build a new access road for the gas supply, repair sidewalks and fix sewerage problems, among other things. The forecast for the current year was about $2.3 million.
More than $6.3 million could be spent on parks and recreation, including implementing new recreation programs and improving landscaping in certain parts of the city. This will only represent an increase of about $32,000 compared to the proposal.
$1.5 million is earmarked for economic development, with a portion of that to be used for further development of Midtown Park, an increase of about $350,000 over the current year.
