With the preseason coming to a close and the 2024 NFL season starting in less than two weeks, teams are trying to reach the 53-man limit and are currently trimming their rosters, but if the right player is available, there is still room to add free agents.
At least one former Florida State star has been looking for a home ahead of the game and could find one in the near future. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook is flying to meet with the Dallas Cowboys. Assuming the trip goes smoothly, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Cook play for the Cowboys this season.

Last year was a rough one for Cook since he was released after six years with the Minnesota Vikings. He landed with the New York Jets to play alongside Aaron Rodgers, but that plan was thwarted in the first game. Cook ended up playing second fiddle to Breece Hall and set a career-low with 67 carries for 214 yards before being released late in the regular season.
Cook joined the Baltimore Ravens for the postseason. He appeared in one playoff game and rushed eight times for 23 yards. Cook just turned 29 and apparently believes he is in the best shape he has been in years.
Before the cut, the Cowboys currently had seven running backs on their roster. The team reunited with Ezekiel Elliott this offseason and also features players like Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle in the backfield.
Injuries have diminished his impact in recent years, but when Cook is truly healthy, it will be interesting to see if he can rediscover some of the playmaking skills he showed in Minnesota. Cook was selected to the Pro Bowl in four of his six seasons with the Vikings and totaled 1,282 rushing attempts for 5,993 yards with 47 touchdowns on the ground. He also caught 236 passes for 1,872 yards and five more touchdowns.
Before his time in the NFL, Cook was a record-setting star at Florida State, leaving the program after just three seasons as the program’s all-time leading runner. In his final two years with the Seminoles, he was named an All-American and first-team All-ACC. Over the course of his career in Tallahassee, Cook ran 687 times for 4,464 yards and 46 touchdowns. He also caught 79 balls for 935 yards and two more scores.
