Cowboys RB Depth Chart: Former Pro Bowler Dalvin Cook visits Dallas, may compete with Ezekiel Elliott

The Cowboys lost depth in the running back department when five-year veteran Tony Pollard left in March and signed with the Tennessee Titans. Dallas brought back Ezekiel Elliot on a one-year deal in late April, bolstering the RB room at least nominally, but running back coach Jeff Blasko is clearly looking for more help.

Tom Pelissero revealed Monday that sources say Dalvin Cook is visiting the Cowboys, suggesting the team is serious about its running game for the upcoming season. The four-time Pro Bowler did not play a significant role on the Jets or Ravens’ rosters last year, but had several successful seasons in Minnesota before that.

His decline in performance last year due to a shoulder injury and his age are certainly warning signs that Dallas should consider, but Cook was one of the best running backs in the league in his prime and could be a good rotation player if he stays healthy and can build on his former glory.

Currently, Elliot is expected to be the Cowboys’ starting running back, but Cook could very well slide into the second line when he is fully healthy. Rico Dowdle was largely unremarkable as a backup last season, posting 361 yards, two touchdowns and 4.1 yards per carry on 89 carries. If no other running back is signed, he will likely split the runs with Elliott.

The experienced Royce Freeman could also be in the mix, while Malik Davis and Deuce Vaughn could serve as alternate running backs depending on who survives cut day.

If Cook signs in Dallas, expect him to replace Freeman immediately and slowly work his way up the order as long as he performs well. Elliott will get every chance to lead the team in touches, but at 29, he’s probably better off splitting the touches like he did last year in New England. The same goes for Cook, who seemed to have even less in the tank than Zeke last season.

How old is Dalvin Cook

Cook turned 29 on August 10. He is around the age when NFL running backs typically start retiring. Players at the position usually peak around age 24. Age and injury history will play a role in Cook’s eligibility for next season.

The running back was signed by the Ravens in late January ahead of their divisional playoff game. Cook had spent two weeks on the team’s practice squad before appearing in the postseason game against Houston, finishing with eight carries for 23 yards.

Cook has made multiple Pro Bowl appearances and has seen better days than his final season with the Jets. In September 2022, he suffered a shoulder dislocation that eventually required surgery, and the following season with New York failed to match his former glory from his time with Minnesota.
