Emma Raducanu has come under criticism online for dismissing Andy Murray’s retirement from tennis as “old news.”
The 21-year-old is back at the US Open this week for the first time since 2022 and hopes to go far in the final major of the year.
It is the first Grand Slam since Murray retired from the sport after his emotional farewell at Wimbledon and the Olympic Games.
Murray and Raducanu were scheduled to play together at Wimbledon before the young Briton cancelled the planned match, denying the 37-year-old at least one more match at his home Slam tournament.
The three-time Grand Slam winner was a great personality in tennis and one of the most respected players ever.
“There’s always another tournament. Of course Andy has achieved amazing things and I saw him win this tournament, but it’s as fast-paced as life.
“The next day the news is already yesterday’s news.”
Raducanu’s comments sparked an internet frenzy as fans were unhappy with the way she appeared to downplay Murray’s retirement.
One angry comment read: “Simply disgusting. This time she showed her true face right on camera!!! Ughh what a horror.”
Another posted: “The arrogance is just astonishing.”
A third said: “It’s just one of those things that, while true, just doesn’t need to be said. Especially from someone who, as many would argue, is overrated himself due to his nostalgia.”
