Blake Hollman, who originally planned to be a physical therapist, worked as a banker after being put on a graduate school waitlist during the recession of 2007-09. He became a small business specialist, which landed him a job at Federated Mutual Insurance Co., and later moved to the Leavitt Group.
What is the current status of your sector in the insurance market?
The market is hardening and it’s becoming increasingly important to sit down with my insureds and review their programs and risk management practices because costs are rising and insurance is harder to find. Many insurers are no longer offering the liability limits they used to. That requires a lot more focus now.
What problem needs to be solved in your sector?
Our entire area is considered a fire risk zone everywhere, and that means it is incredibly difficult to find and obtain property insurance in Northern Arizona.
How do you apply risk management principles in your personal life?
I try to avoid distractions while driving and practice what I preach. I do my best, but I’m not perfect. I travel so much that it’s hard for me not to do business on my phone.
What would surprise people about you?
The Leavitt Group gave me the opportunity to manage 21 people, many of whom had previous ownership and management experience, whereas I had neither.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was in high school, I wanted to do college wrestling and hopefully Olympic wrestling.
Which destination is at the top of your travel wish list?
Rome. I have been obsessed with Roman history since high school.
