It’s the gloomy month of August, but there are still some good new TV shows worth watching on Netflix this month. There’s a young adult crime thriller, a cheeky comedy, and a shockingly great drama series about the making of reality TV. Plus, AMC and Netflix are teaming up again so the mega-streamer can air seasons of some of the network’s biggest shows, so now is the perfect time for us to convince you why you should watch Interview with the Vampire.
Check out our picks for the best new shows on Netflix in August 2024 below.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder
Based on the bestselling novel by Holly Jackson, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder has been topping Netflix’s top 10 charts since its initial release earlier this month. The story follows a bright young girl named Pip Fitz-Amobi (played by Wednesday actress Emma Myers) who is dissatisfied with the police investigation into the murder of a schoolgirl. She decides to investigate the case herself, but is the real killer hot on her heels? This British series also stars Zain Iqbal, Anna Maxwell Martin and Gary Beadle. – Adam Chitwood
Interview with a vampire
AMC’s lush, addictive adaptation of Interview with the Vampire pulses with lust and bloodlust — while being every bit as thoughtful and philosophical as Anne Rice’s definitive vampire novels. Interview with the Vampire is a true adaptation, taking Rice’s best characters and dilemmas, faithfully bringing them to life… and then reinventing them. Written confidently for the screen, with love for the book and the stage, Interview with the Vampire is simply great television; elegantly crafted at every stage of the creative process and stunningly acted by a phenomenal cast, led by Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe Du Lac and Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt.
They’re a magnetic and pitiful duo, endlessly fascinating and utterly compelling. And then there’s the brilliant reinvention of the interviewer himself, played by a hilarious Daniel Molloy. Interview with the Vampire gets everything right, but it will also surprise you. If you haven’t had a chance to get into it yet, you can watch the first season on Netflix now – and after you get through that, there’s good news: Season 2 has already wrapped and is just as excellent. You won’t find Season 2 on Netflix, but it is available to stream on AMC+. – Haleigh Foutch
The Terror
The Terror is the perfect series to get you ready for spooky season. Season 1 of this anthology series starring Jared Harris is basically a “lost at sea” monster story that follows the crew of two ships in the mid-1800s who become stuck in ice during their crossing of the Northwest Passage. The stranded men are then terrorized by a creature or force that begins brutally killing them. Season 2, set in a Japanese internment camp, is available on AMC+. – Air conditioning
A discovery of witches
If witches are more your thing, you can stream all three seasons of the Deborah Harkness adaptation A Discovery of Witches on Netflix this month. The story follows a reluctant witch (played by Teresa Palmer) who discovers and deciphers an ancient manuscript that makes her the target of a number of supernatural beings, while also entering into a relationship with a vampire (played by Matthew Goode). Since witches and vampires are sworn enemies, this complicates things, but what is ultimately a love story twists and turns through time and space over the course of the three seasons. It’s an entertaining story. – Air conditioning
Unreal
One of the best reality TV shows, UnREAL was a sensation when it premiered on Lifetime in 2015. In the series, Shiri Appelby plays a producer who returns to a popular reality dating show after a breakdown. As the pressure mounts, she tries to manipulate the contestants to get the best possible TV result. It’s a compelling look into the way reality shows Really filmed and all four seasons are now on Netflix. – Air conditioning
preacher
Preacher is absolutely wild. The AMC series ran for four seasons and is based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis, who also created The Boys. In Preacher, Dominic Cooper plays Jesse, a Texas preacher who discovers a new superpower: he has the voice of God and can command others to do whatever he wants. From there, the story only gets weirder, as this violent, darkly humorous show changes its setting basically every season. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg helped get the series off the ground by directing the first two episodes of the first two seasons, giving the entire proceedings a dusty Western vibe. – AC
Kevin can f**k himself
It’s safe to say there’s nothing on television quite like Valerie Armstrong’s Kevin Can F**k Himself. When bumbling, carefree Kevin (Eric Petersen) and his nagging wife Allison (Annie Murphy) are together, it’s bright lights and canned laughs as the series takes on the rhythm of a typical sitcom. But when Allison is alone, the truth about her lonely and loveless marriage is revealed. This AMC original expertly turns the classic sitcom on its head, painting its hopeless sitcom husband as a manipulative monster who uses his unexpected charm to bend everyone to his will, in a series that jumps back and forth between slapstick comedy and dark, heartbreaking drama. – Sarah Krueger
