Judge Manik sent to Sylhet jail; eggs and shoes were thrown at him

A court in Sylhet has sent retired Supreme Court judge AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik to jail.

Earlier, he was brought before the court of 1st Judge Alamgir Hossain in Sylhet at 4.10 pm on Saturday (August 24). Witnesses said many people pelted eggs and shoes at Judge Manik when he was being produced in court. Several people even tried to attack him. He was then brought before the court amid tight security.

On Friday evening, Manik was arrested by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel while trying to flee into India across the Dona border in Kanaighat upazila.

Then, early on Saturday morning, the BGB officials handed him over to Kanaighat police station. Police said a complaint had been filed against him.

According to sources, he tried to flee to India. A case was filed in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court in Dhaka on Thursday against AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, Workers Party leader Rashed Khan Menon and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSoD) leader Hasanul Haque Inu for making derogatory remarks about BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.

After a hearing, City Magistrate Saiful Islam asked the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to submit a report after an investigation.

According to the petition of the complainant, on October 3, 2022, Justice Manik made derogatory remarks about Ziaur Rahman in a talk show of Channel I in which Manik said, “Ziaur Rahman was not a freedom fighter, he was a Razakar.”

Justice Manik, who retired in September 2015, was known for his controversial remarks during the tenure of the ousted Awami League government. He recently faced legal troubles as cases were filed against him for making objectionable remarks about former President Ziaur Rahman, the founder of the BNP.

Following the resignation and defection of Sheikh Hasina on August 5 in the wake of a student movement, several politicians and officials of the previous government have gone into hiding, some have been arrested.
