One of Salt Lake City’s most creative restaurants closes – Gastronomic Salt Lake City

This is a terrible loss — as the week ends comes the news that SLC Eatery will be closing its doors at the end of September. The SLC restaurant (1017 S Main St) was undoubtedly one of the city’s most creative and ambitious chef-led projects. Unfortunately, you now have just a few weeks left to experience the talents of chefs and owners Paul Chamberlain and Logen Crew. On various social media platforms, the restaurant posted the following farewell this Friday (August 23):

. . .

We are terribly sad to say that we will be CLOSING our doors at the end of September (our last night of worship is scheduled soon). We tried very hard to keep it open for you, these wonderful people, but we were unable to do so. This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has eaten with us and worked with us. Our regulars are so amazing and we are truly sad to see you no more. A special thank you to our regulars, you know who you are. You have a special place in our hearts!

To the best staff an owner can have, to those still with us and those who left the nest for bigger and better places: you all made this restaurant so fun and incredible. I can’t thank you enough! Speaking of staff, we WILL STAY OPEN for another month so they can find new opportunities and see your wonderful faces again! We hope you’ll stop by and support us one last time to enjoy Chef Logen’s James Beard Award-winning food, be pampered by our amazing service staff, and enjoy delicious drinks from our bar.

Come and support this amazing team one last time! Our opening hours may change a little but you can always call us and we will keep our voicemail updated. You can send us a message here and we will get back to you as soon as possible. This Sunday brunch on the 25th will probably be our last brunch. We will have fewer tables and ask that you reserve as we have a smaller team and want to make sure we can give you the best last service.

Wondering what happens next? We hope to continue to host private events, supper clubs, pop-ups, and maybe even luncheons at this location, so keep following us here if you want to stay updated. It’s been such a pleasure feeding you and being a part of such a wonderful dining scene here in Salt Lake. We hope you’ll visit the places you love often, as we know most independent restaurants are struggling greatly, even if it doesn’t look like it. Go to the chains a little less. We love you to death and hope to feed you again in other ways! Thank you! We love you!

When it opened in 2019 (yes, a year before good old C19), the restaurant’s generic name proudly stood in stark contrast to a frantically creative menu that could change from week to week, day to day. Local journalists (myself included) were enamored with the inventive cuisine – the restaurant won pretty much every local award there is. The culmination of those five years of hard work and praise was undoubtedly a 2023 James Beard nomination for Messrs Chamberlain and crew in the best cooking region in the mountains. Unfortunately, it was not to be.

If there is any doubt about the duo’s caliber, take note that they don’t use the overnight-rested carpet trick; something we see all too often here in Utah, as the wait staff usually gets no warning at all when the lights go out. Not here. Fabulous chefs and people alike. I hope they come back.
