A RARE car brand will launch a luxury sports convertible to compete with manufacturers such as Ferrari and Bentley.
The little-known ultra-premium brand Maybach, a sub-brand of Mercedes, has unveiled a new convertible at the Monterey Car Week in California, which is described as “the sportiest model in the history of the Maybach brand”.
The luxury brand has previously revised the S-Class sedan and GLS SUV, while Maybach’s first electric vehicle is based on the Mercedes EQS SUV.
The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series will be produced around the standard Mercedes SL and will offer some two-tone paint finishes in black over red or white, although the elegant engine can also be painted in other colors “upon special customer request.”
Other small differences include a striking chrome front with a fin running across the entire bonnet, which can optionally be decorated with the “Maybach pattern”.
The headlights feature rose gold details, while the windshield surround and side skirts are chrome-plated.
Of course, the interior is finished in crystal white nappa leather, while the seats feature a bespoke floral pattern.
In terms of performance, the SL 680 Monogram Series will retain the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the standard Mercedes SL63 – with an output of 577 hp.
According to Merc, the SL63 reaches a speed of around 315 km/h.
Mercedes has not announced the price or availability of the upcoming Maybach engine – although versions of the S-Class and EQS SUV each cost around £200,000.
Maybachs are known to command a considerably higher price than their Mercedes counterparts, and the current range-topping SL already costs nearly £200,000.
In comparison, Ferrari offers the Roma Spider at a price of around £210,000, while Bentley’s upcoming Continental GTC will cost £259,000.
Fans of convertible sports cars might prefer the elegant Saab 9-3, which can be had for under £5,000.
Elsewhere, a fast Ford that has been in storage for 21 years – with just 16 miles on the clock – is up for sale at an upcoming auction.
