Since its founding in 1918, Citizen has steadily built a reputation for producing high-quality watches at an affordable price. It’s a market that’s particularly difficult to break into today, given the number of brands that exist today. Yet even among the growing number of competitors, the Japanese brand continues to stand out thanks to its penchant for developing inspired new watches that combine tradition with sharp design and functionality. The latest addition in this vein comes from Citizen’s Attesa collection – inspired by nothing less than the layers of the Earth’s crust.

The Attesa line of watches was launched in 1987, but this new, earth-inspired design offers a blend of the collection’s classic chronograph look with modern beauty, including a dial with hints of green, purple and blue. Both the case and bracelet are made of scratch-resistant titanium and feature a black diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating. Although the watch is quite large at 44.6 mm, it doesn’t feel oversized or ostentatious.
Functionality is top notch, too. Featuring Citizen’s famous Eco-Drive technology, the watch can run on any light source – so there’s never a battery to replace. Water resistant to 100 meters, it also features a world time display for 27 cities, a chronograph with 1/20th of a second accuracy, a Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) display, and a perpetual calendar. This kind of functionality, along with the high-quality (if not entirely luxurious) materials, has always helped the brand stand out from other, more affordable watchmakers.
Compared to Citizen’s usual price, this new Attesa Collection release is quite expensive at $2,295. That shouldn’t be a huge surprise given the limited edition status, with only 1,900 unnumbered examples being released worldwide. All in all, the brand’s latest gem for die-hard Citizen fans is still a steal for anyone willing to spend on quality and style without going overboard.
