The popularity of Cardrona Resort among skiers and snowboarders
Cardrona Resort in New Zealand has long been a favourite among skiers and snowboarders. The fantastic terrain, stunning views and typical New Zealand hospitality attract visitors every year. But just when you thought Cardrona couldn’t get any better, a major upgrade is about to take place.
A groundbreaking expansion for winter 2025
Winter 2025 will be a landmark season for Cardrona as the resort prepares to unveil the highly anticipated Soho Basin expansion, an upgrade that promises to elevate Cardrona’s status as a world-class winter sports destination.
Introducing the Soho Basin Express!
The centerpiece of the expansion is the Soho Basin Express, a state-of-the-art 6-seater Doppelmayr detachable chairlift. This brand new lift opens up 150 acres of additional terrain and offers more space and more slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels.
New terrain for advanced and experienced skiers
The expanded terrain is designed for intermediate and expert skiers, offering playful areas, excellent snow conditions and challenging steeps. With the new Soho Basin terrain, Cardrona officially becomes New Zealand’s largest ski area – it’s worth getting your ski legs ready!
The Soho Basin Terrain: Playful and entertaining
If you’re already familiar with Cardrona, the new Soho Basin terrain will remind you of the Captain’s Area – fun and playful with a mix of groomed runs and off-piste opportunities. The south-westerly exposure of the basin makes for excellent snow accumulation, making it perfect for an extended ski and snowboard season.
Improved facilities for a better guest experience
In addition to the new grounds, Cardrona is making improvements throughout the resort to ensure the rush of visitors in 2025 runs smoothly. These include:
A new snowmaking system to improve the snow cover.
Expanded facilities in the base building to accommodate increased visitor numbers.
Improved parking and shuttle services for smoother access to the mountain.
A new building featuring a retail store, expanded dining options, seating and viewing areas where guests can relax and enjoy the view.
These improvements are in line with Cardrona’s commitment to providing exceptional experiences for its guests. Improvements to date include a new guest services area, improved retail space, expanded dining options and the innovative ‘Chondola’, a combined gondola and chairlift installed several years ago to improve access to the mountain.
First-class skiing opportunities in spring
The new terrain at Soho Basin will not only provide exceptional snow during peak season, but is also expected to provide some of the best spring skiing in New Zealand. Thanks to the favourable snow conditions, the snow tends to stay until the later part of the season, making for fantastic spring skiing.
