STAUNTON, VA. (WHSV)—Staunton City Schools (SCS) hosted Staunton readsa book fair and back-to-school event in downtown Staunton on Friday evening. The event celebrated books, children and the community.
SCS has partnered with The Book Dragon Shop in Staunton to offer children a discounted price on books and reading materials for the new school year. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from the event will go to Bessie Weller, McSwain and Ware Elementary School in Staunton.
“When our customers support us, we can support the schools in return,” said Sandi Cararo, owner of The Book Dragon Shop. “We are here to support as much as we can, and by doing that, we have a chance to give back to the community,” Cararo said.
The event also featured book giveaways, storytimes with locals and author visits. Karen Early, librarian at Ware Elementary School, says the event celebrates how books can bring families and communities together.
“The best thing a family can do for their children is to bring books into the home so we can get families involved,” Early said. “Teaching children to read and write is the best thing and there is no wrong way to do it,” Early said.
