RENO, Nevada – The Meruelo family and Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (GSR) are donating $200,000 to the Tailhook Educational Foundation (TEF) Scholarship through the GSRCares Educational Fund, with $50,000 donated annually through 2027. These funds will fund scholarships to help Naval Aviation Training students pursue higher education.
“This contribution reflects GSR’s deep appreciation for the men and women who have served our country, and we are honored to support their legacy through education,” said Alex Meruelo, owner of GSR and CEO of the Meruelo Group. “By investing in the futures of these students, we hope to make a lasting impact on their lives and help them achieve their dreams.”
The Tailhook Educational Foundation awards over 100 scholarships annually, with an average grant of over $4,000. The Foundation’s merit-based scholarships are highly sought after, with a significant portion awarded to students pursuing degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. The scholarships are available exclusively to Naval Aviation students and help them achieve their educational goals and contribute to the nation’s future leadership. TEF scholarships are only possible through the continued generosity of our individual and organizational donors.
In 2024, over 500 naval aviation students applied for a TEF scholarship, 136 of these applicants received a TEF scholarship.
“The Tailhook Educational Foundation is grateful for the generous support of GSR and the Meruelo family,” said Rodger Welch, USN Captain (Ret) and Executive Director of TEF. “This donation will greatly assist our scholars, who represent the future of our nation, in pursuing their academic and professional goals.”
To celebrate the donation, Alex Meruelo, owner of GSR and CEO of Meruelo Group, presented TEF board members with a check for $50,000 on Thursday, August 22, as well as a ceremonial check for $200,000 to underscore the team’s commitment for years to come.
This partnership between GSRCares and TEF represents a shared commitment to developing future leaders. For more information about the Tailhook Educational Foundation, visit tailhook.net/tef. For more information about GSR, visit grandsierraresort.com.
