Trump strikes a different tone during his visit to York County

With the Democratic National Convention in the spotlight this week, the former president will not be waiting in the background.

Donald Trump was at a factory in York, Pennsylvania, on Monday. The traditional tactic during the week of a convention is for the other party to hold back. That will not be the case for Republicans this week. The hour-long speech to a small but loyal crowd of hundreds of people emphasized policy, not punch lines.

Former President Trump said, “What I’m promising today is a complete pro-American overhaul. We’re going to have systems in place to encourage domestic manufacturing and punish those who move jobs overseas or to Mexico.”

We hear the campaign is focusing on smaller events like this in the coming days to get ahead of the economic policy speeches we’re all likely to hear at the Democratic National Convention. It sounds like Republican Congressman Dan Musser will be there. He says, “When we have a policy debate, we win overwhelmingly. Because our policies bring strength and growth, and let’s face it: Kamala Harris’ record is broken borders, broken economy, broken world.”

Trump tried to draw major distinctions between his policies and Harris’ on energy issues, saying, “On day one, I’m going to tell the fracking companies to drill, baby, drill. You can’t be an industrial nation if you don’t have cheap energy.”

If this is a new strategy for Trump’s campaign, are his most ardent supporters on board? Among the group we spoke to, the answer was a hesitant “yes.” But most were quick to stress that they like his aggressive, direct style and don’t want him to change. One participant even said he wants Trump to behave this way “whether he wins or loses.”
