The summer of 2024 will also see record heat temperatures.
It should come as no surprise that Las Vegas is on track to have its warmest year on record.
The brutal summer has claimed 123 lives this year, according to the latest figures released last week by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
June and July saw record highs, with average daily temperatures several degrees higher. According to the National Weather Service, the same is expected for August.
“It will probably be our hottest year on record unless the fall gets really cool,” said meteorologist Barry Pierce.
The number of days with 105 degrees Celsius or more at Harry Reid International Airport this year is 68 (as of August 19), surpassing the record of 61 days set in 1940.
The number of days with 110 or more is 35, which once again surpasses the record of 29 days from 1940.
As of August 19, there were 78 days with a value of 100 or more. The record from 1994 is 81 days.
Due to a cool winter and spring, the average daily temperature (this year through August 18) is currently at the third highest in history at 73.9. The record for the same period in 2018 is 74.2, and 2017 is in second place at 74.1.
A warm autumn is likely to push average daily temperatures higher, potentially making the year the hottest on record.
Heat records in July
Only a tenth of a degree prevented the average temperature at Las Vegas airport from reaching 38 degrees in July.
The hottest month on record ended with 99.9 degrees, well above last year’s record of 97.3 degrees.
Among other memories of how hot July was:
– Highest temperature ever recorded at Harry Reid International Airport: 120 on July 7.
– Seven consecutive days with a high of 115 or higher.
– 41 days with highs of 105 or higher (data up to June).
— 11 consecutive days with a high of 110 or more. The previous record was 10, set in July last year.
– 7 days with new consecutive daily record highs: (July 6: 115, July 7: 120, July 8: 115, July 9: 119, July 10: 119, July 11: 118 and July 12: 115).
– 13 days in the month with a morning low temperature of 90 or more, beating the previous record of eight days set last July.
Every day in July the morning temperature was 80 degrees or higher. There were 23 such days in June and all 18 of August so far.
August so far above average
Although July temperatures have not yet reached their maximum, this month is expected to be the hottest August on record at the airport.
The average temperature through August 18 is 97.9 degrees. The monthly record is 95.6 degrees and was set in 2020.
“We are currently a good 2.3 degrees above the record,” Pierce said.
On five of those 18 days, the morning low temperature was 90 degrees or higher.
“Cooler weekend”
The cooler air this weekend (highs of around 95 degrees are expected on Saturday and 98 degrees on Sunday) will likely be welcome for residents and visitors.
However, a return to the low 100s is expected from Monday.
A trough moving toward the Great Basin will “keep conditions close to normal from August 25 to 29,” Pierce said.
According to the weather forecast for the region from August 31 to September 13 published by the Climate Predication Center, there is a 55 to 70 percent chance that temperatures in the valley will be above normal.
