LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (WWSB) – On Monday, representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) went door to door in the community of Summerfield to talk to neighbors and offer them assistance in the form of federal emergency funds for the damage left behind by Hurricane Debby.
Furniture, clothing, drywall and appliances line the curbs in front of many homes on Clubhouse Drive. Many longtime neighbors said storm surge is something they’ve never experienced in Lakewood Ranch.
Richard Myles has lived in the area for more than 20 years. His home sustained thousands of dollars in damage. He said he is now glad he purchased flood insurance several years ago.
“The water always reaches my property line and then disappears across the river, but this time the water just came, even on a Sunday morning when there hadn’t been much rain,” Myles said.
FEMA officials have set up a disaster response center at the Lakewood Ranch Library, 16410 Rangeland Parkway, open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
