ATLANTA – Police and firefighters are on site where a fire broke out overnight at a construction site in southeast Atlanta.
The fire broke out around 3 a.m. at the location in the 2000 block of Memorial Drive. It has since been extinguished.
FOX 5 cameras captured several officers inspecting fire-damaged construction equipment.
While police have not confirmed the fire was arson, FOX 5 has learned that the development company responsible for the site was reportedly targeted in January by protesters opposing the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center.
On January 26, a fire broke out at the construction site of the Empire Zephyr townhome project at the corner of Boulevard and Custer Avenue. The fire damaged several pieces of construction equipment.
Hours after the January fire, Atlanta Fire Chief Roderick Smith and Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said they had evidence that the fire was arson and that it was related to protests against the training center, which has been nicknamed “Cop City” by activists.
There was no official statement as to whether there was a connection between the two fires.
