Jimmy Garoppolo has a problem. He couldn’t find a home in either New England or San Francisco and failed miserably with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Garoppolo has been both a reserve and a starter. Now he’s a reserve again. Garoppolo also has a spot with the Los Angeles Rams.
So what’s his problem?
Garoppolo recently sang the praises of his new team in an interview with The Athletic. Garoppolo seemed to take a veiled swipe at the Raiders. Or the Patriots. Or the 49ers. Pick one of these three teams – all of them have decided to part ways with the quarterback.
“This is a place where you can be yourself, which is different than other places I’ve been,” Garoppolo said. “You’re pressured with a sense of urgency, but in a good way.”
What is a Good Sense of urgency?
“Obviously, everybody wants to win,” Garoppolo said. “Everybody wants to perform well. Here, they’re doing it the right way. They’re pushing you in a positive way. There’s just a lot of good things happening, man. I’m enjoying every second of it. Even the meetings are a good time. Everything’s going well right now.”
As opposed to pushing a player negatively? What is the right way?
Garoppolo won two Super Bowl rings from his time as a backup for the Patriots. Did they not do it right? He made it to the Super Bowl with the 49ers. It was his best season in the NFL – a 13-3 record and career highs in passing yards and touchdowns. Of course they lost. Did the 49ers not do it “right”?
When Garoppolo arrived in the desert, he said he wanted to “earn everything.”
“I don’t want to be given anything like, ‘You’re the franchise guy’ or anything like that. I want to come here and earn it,” Garappolo said. “I think that will come through hard work, working with teammates and being in the facility. All those little things will play a role, but I don’t want to be given anything.”
Garoppolo has earned what he has gotten during his time with the Silver and Blacks. Seven games, six starts, three wins, three losses, a 65.1 percent completion rate, just over 1,000 passing yards, and seven touchdowns to nine interceptions.
Garoppolo’s tenure with the Raiders was a complete failure, and the blame for that cannot be placed on either former Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler or then-head coach Josh McDaniels.
Garoppolo played himself out of the job. A fourth-round rookie was considered the better option. And that’s what he proved.
The Raiders did it right wayand now Garoppolo is in Los Angeles. Just like the 49ers, the Raiders have a better option with younger, unheralded talent.
It’s just business. Only one of the parties seems to have taken it personally.
