In honor of the U.S. team’s victory in the men’s basketball tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Adidas had a gift for guard Anthony Edwards: a custom pair of its shoes.

The sportswear brand unveiled a gold medal-inspired edition of Edwards’ signature shoe, the AE 1, at a party at the Westfield Forum Des Halles in Paris. The shoe shares many of the same features as the base version of the AE 1, but features a gold main color, a white sole, and black on the heel, tongue, and laces.

Edwards is currently the face of Adidas’ basketball brand and the company released its first shoe in December – the aforementioned AE 1. Early reviews praised the shoe’s comfortable feel, unique design and high quality.

The gold medal-inspired version of the AE 1 appears to be an exclusive 1-of-1 shoe for Edwards, but Adidas has already announced new colorways for the shoe in the near future.

The company already released the “Mural” colorway on August 5th. Additionally, the AE 1 Low Year of the Snake will be released in January, while a release date for the “Slime” colorway has yet to be announced.

Noah Lyles clarifies his comments on Edwards’ shoe event

Noticeably absent from Edwards’ shoe event on Sunday was Noah Lyles, another Adidas athlete and 2024 Olympic gold medalist.

In an interview with Time In the article published in June, Lyles appeared to challenge both Edwards and Adidas. The sprinter seemed to be bothered by the clothing brand’s use of Edwards’ shoe event as an incentive in its contract negotiations with Lyles.

“What do you want to do?” Lyles told Time. “You want to invite me to an event for a guy who hasn’t even been to an NBA Finals? In a sport you don’t even care about? And you give him a shoe? No offense: The guy is an incredible athlete. He’s having a hell of a year. I love that they had the insight to give him a shoe because they saw he was going to be big. I’m like, ‘How could you not see that in me?'”

The interview moment went viral again after Lyles failed to show up for Edwards’ event with Adidas in Paris on Sunday. The sprinter took to X, formerly Twitter, on Monday to clarify his previous comments and absence from the event, which he attributed to “prior commitments.”

“There is a rumor going around that I didn’t go to the (Anthony Edwards) shoe launch because he didn’t deserve them,” Lyles wrote. “That’s not true, he definitely deserves his shoes, he’s an incredible player. The problem was finding time due to my prior commitments. Congratulations on your Olympic victory!”
