Popular Korean convenience store chain Emart24 has closed abruptly all 3 sales outlets in Singapore from March 18, 2024.
The news was first reported by a post on the Atrium for sale in Singapore Facebook page on the afternoon of 18 March. A quick online search shows that this is true – the Google Maps profiles for its Jurong Point, NEX And Margaret Market Points of sale have been updated to “Permanently closed” Status.
However, the reason for these closures remains a mystery to us, as Emart24 has not yet published an official update or announcement of any kind on its social media pages.
Emart24 is a famous Korean convenience store chain known for offering affordable Korean street food, ready meals, beverages and lifestyle items. It is widely available in Asia, with thousands of outlets in Korea and numerous international outlets, including 48 in Malaysia.
On the other hand, its presence on our little red dot was rather short-lived; its sudden closure occurred after just over a year of operation.
Emart24 first landed on our shores in late 2022, with its first opening in Jurong Point on 23 Dec 2022A second branch in NEX followed shortly afterwards, on 24 Dec 2022. The third branch in Margaret Market came a little later in July 2023.
The opening was a highly anticipated affair, and Singaporeans flocked to the stores in the first few days. Crowds of customers enjoyed street snacks in iconic Handmade Corn Dogs, Tteokbokki, Kimbap and signature CUPBAP rice bowls.
Part of this attraction had to do with the novelty of experiencing Korean convenience store culture here at home. Emart24 offered unique experiences of Korea and its culture in the simple form of automated DIY Ramyun and its range of viral drink packs poured into ice cream tubs.
For a moment it felt like we could enjoy Ramyun along the Han River and sip ice-cold Americanos on the streets of Myeongdong – all from the convenience of a local shopping mall.
The sudden departure of Emart24 is indeed sad. However, I am sure many of us would love to welcome them or other international convenience store brands back with open arms.
